Home of the Big Sky State games, Billings offers abundant recreational opportunities: mountain climbing, camping, back-packing, amateur geology and archaeology, horseback riding, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer or the martial arts.
Spectator Sports
Throughout the year, Billings sports fans enjoy cheering local teams to victory. In addition to competitive college and high school teams, enthusiasts cheer for the Billings Mustangs (professional baseball team associated with the Cincinnati Reds), Billings Outlaws (indoor football team), and the Billings Bulls (junior league hockey). Championship rodeos, horse racing, and pari-mutual betting can be enjoyed at MetraPark.
Fishing and Hunting
Fishing:
Montana is the center of the best trout fishing in the country. Located within the immediate Billings area, fishermen have access to numerous streams: Rock Creek and the Stillwater, Boulder and Musselshell Rivers C just to name a few. But you won't find any better fishing in the world than you will on the Big Horn, Yellowstone or Madison Rivers C all known for their world-famous trophy trout.
Hunting:
A hunter's paradise, Montana offers a wide range of hunting opportunities. Within Yellowstone County, a wide variety of hunting provides year-round challenges. (Must apply for a big game license.) Gun enthusiasts enjoy shooting ranges at three gun and trap clubs on the outskirts of the city. Summer Sports
Water Sports:
Tracing the footsteps of Lewis and Clark, leisurely float trips down the Yellowstone River allow for sightseeing, fishing and wade-walking with mountain views and native wildlife. Canoeing, kayaking and scuba diving are also popular summer activities.
Tennis:
Attesting to the popularity of the sport, tennis courts can be found all over the city. Eight city parks offer a total of 25 tennis courts.
Golf:
The mild weather enjoyed by Billings is conducive to a long golf season, often from March through December. There are eight golf courses in the area, four of which are open to the public.
Winter Sports
Montanans have the luxury of being able to vacation in the same state where they live and work C even in the winter. Snow times are fun times for skiers and snowmobilers. Our dry climate produces some of the nation's finest powder snow at more than a dozen alpine ski areas and there are hundreds of pristine wilderness trails that beckon to be skied cross country. Three of the most popular skiing areas for downhill enthusiasts are within easy driving distance of Billings.
Red Lodge Mountain:
With the 1930s development of the Beartooth Highway, described as one of the most "scenic spectacular roads in the world," Red Lodge became a northeast entrance to Yellowstone Park. Big Sky of Montana:
Located 18 miles north of Yellowstone National Park and 185 miles from Billings, Big Sky offers 55 miles of alpine trails classed as 25 percent novice, 50 percent intermediate and 25 percent expert. For area information, write or call:

Bridger Bowl:
Located approximately 140 miles from Billings, Bridger Bowl features more than 40 runs with bowls, powder glades, trails and groomed slopes on 2,000 acres in the Gallatin National Forest.
